Is your organizational data sharing its secrets with you?

Image
By now we are almost deafened by the data science, AI and ML chorus through Youtube lectures, ever popping data science course advertisements and stories about how data science earned millions for a big corporation. Almost every person, irrespective of age, is talking about data and predictability. The question about how 'Google' knows where I am, my pictures, my videos, my calendar, where was I last year, and my best friends is nothing new and it is asked with awe about the technology surrounding every second of our existence. Overall, the words 'data','analytics' are now the part of mysticism that makes its presence felt at every corner of the world, urban and rural alike. But how it came into being? How it is possible for a company situated a long way somewhere in US to track my every moment? Companies like Google, Amazon et al are leveraging the state of the art technology 'somehow' to track movements and activities of signed up users. That '...

What you should really worry about when you think of your website?

Image
I have been talking to quite a few website owners who happen to be world renowned consultants, medical practitioners with decade long established practices and a couple of technology business owners. When I talk to them about their websites, they are either too possessive about the content or go on backfoot to say that they are already considering revamping their websites. But during all these interactions with them there are quite a few things I noticed about their websites and as an analyst I could already see a pattern emerging which is more likely to be a common pattern for many website owners. Although the techniques I used and code I wrote to analyze their webpages is not in the purview of this article, what we are going to discuss are some of the questions we should ask ourselves when we think of making the website better.     Is my target audience viewing my website? Am I measuring the usage somehow? Many of us think that a web page once written is don...

It's only words..even for corporate Media Houses when it comes to online branding

Image
"It's only words..words are all that I have to take your heart away.." Or so goes the Boyzone song..the lyricist must have penned down the words thinking of a person in mind..but in today's digital world it is equally true for every professional organization, business and not for profits alike..to bank on text based branding. But my curiosity went a little further to understand what the media houses - the brand creators, opinion makers, champions of social causes, marketing facilitators and the change agents (their own words!!!) - do when it comes to telling their own story to the world. At the start, let me clarify that this piece is not about passing value judgments and marking the business houses red and blue..red for the socialists and blue for capitalists..or even marking them pro-government or pro-people (a synonym of anti-government at times.. )..the idea over here is to understand what these media houses tell about themselves and more precisely the words ...

If you think you needn't review your CV before sending..think again!!

#textanalytics #textmining #R #machinelearning When was the last time you updated your resume? One month back..two month's back..or when you had switched to your current job 5 years ago..reasons for not updating resumes are plenty..you rely more on connections, you would rather have a video profile or a portfolio of creations..but still the question remains..why you don't keep updating your resume regularly? Well, let us not get into the excuses part and understand what your resume tells your potential recruiter or a customer-to-be. Quantitatively your resume might be spanning across several pages or a single pager..it may be showing you how much of years you have spent in your domain..or your awards..or strong academics..or the prestigious colleges you have attended..when you send it across to an unknown person it goes out as a bunch of text strings and it is left to the other person as to what they should make of it.. One might argue that it is true for every written o...

Beware of the documentation! When was the last time you used the product documentation that did not run into 500-1000 pages, and you got the information in the format you wanted and in the location you thought you would get it? Did you feel like searching for the information like searching for water in the dreary desert where most of the time you stumbled upon mirages than the oasis? Was the information too long or too short or just as you required? The reason I am asking these question is some kind of a soul searching exercise I thought of undertaking after I spent close to a decade in technical communication. I must confess that I have written many a brochures that banked more on the slang and tongue twisters in absence of the real value benefit that should have been conveyed or was just a cover up as the services or products offered were same as that of competitors. The google has made writers (many of them) lazy so much that they first see what competition has written and ...

Everyone loves his (wiki)space..yet..

Image
This world is full of writers, some of them are pros and the rest are wannabe pros and soon to be pros. But all of them love to scribble..and there are just too many tools available for word editing. Yet none matches the popularity of Wikis and similar spaces where users can create their own space, define navigation and contribute what they can- be it news, articles, work place insights, technical tips and workarounds for some problems. In our corporate day jobs we keep on learning a lot of things and we end up creating such Wiki spaces or similar intranet sites where we write a lot and upload a lot of files. The reasons can be multi-fold and multi-dimensional such as creating a page for each working team in a group, then a page for each software release by a group, then a page for writing about specific release updates by teams, then a page for uploading all the documentation available for release, then a page for all patches available for a specific release of a product in a pa...
